The First Step: Risk Without a Blueprint

Vince had zero background in cannabis, cannabinoids, or wellness. He was a guy running paint and remodeling businesses. But grief doesn’t listen to resumes.

He began researching cannabinoids, sourcing “ditch weed” hemp from wild patches around Kansas City, not the kind that gets you high, but the kind that legal hemp still produces. In a matter of weeks, he had crude extracts. He laboriously refined them into oil, made homemade doses, and administered them to his uncle. It wasn’t a business plan. When Vince decided to go public with his formulations, he didn’t overthink it. He picked up the phone. Called his graphic artist. Gave a loose brief. Earth-tones, natural vibe, authenticity.

“What do you call it?” she asked.

He shrugged. “Medicine Man.”

She stopped him. You’re signed up for FDA scrutiny. He thought on it. Then she tried again: “Shaman.”

But Vince didn’t bail. He doubled down. For two years, he went store-to-store, explaining, educating, building believers. Vitamin stores, head shops — they weren’t high-end boutiques. They were grass-roots distribution points. But slowly, orders started creeping in.

From Mom-and-Pop To Franchise Machine

By late 2016, CBD American Shaman opened its first retail location — not in a glitzy part of town, but in a gritty district of Kansas City, packed with regular people. The timing was perfect: first Friday of the month was like a mini Mardi Gras there. Free drinks, crowds, energy. Instead of swinging for the rich, Vince went for the real regular folks tired, hurting, searching.

That store crushed it. Months later a second. Then a third. Then dozens. People who had seen the long nights, hard road, gut-checking decisions they wanted in. Former vendors, road travelers tired of life on the road they wanted to build something stable. So Vince offered them the first franchise slot. No big pitch. Just a simple deal: replicate the store, sell the product, educate customers.

Within a year, 45 locations were signed up via licensing agreements. In April 2018, the franchise officially launched. It was raw, fast, and built on clarity — not hype.

But being a pioneer meant facing real risk. CBD in 2015–2017 was practically an outlaw market. Vince and a small group of early players knew they had to protect their fledgling industry. So they banded together with others: they weren’t enemies. They weren’t rivals. They were fighters.

They formed a coalition, lobbied, educated lawmakers. They pushed hard. And in 2018, their efforts paid off: the 2018 United States Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived cannabinoids nationwide. Overnight the market opened. The stigma dropped. The revolution began.

Suddenly, CBD American Shaman wasn’t a fringe brand. It was a legitimate business built on legality, transparency, qualit and a story.

Scaling Up, Surviving Chaos, COVID, and Market Pressure

With legitimacy came scale. More stores. Licensing deals. Retail footprints growing fast.

Then COVID hit. Brick-and-mortar retail was tanking everywhere. But because Vince had built supply-chain capabilities, manufacturing, and a brand suddenly the team pivoted. Hand sanitizer. Environmental sanitizers. Essentials. Products people needed. Stores that had to close now had a reason to sell. It was adapt or die. They adapted fast.

Some stores shut. Many survived. Today the company rebuilt with 35 corporate stores in strategic locations instead of dozens of franchises. The core remains strong, lean, and controlled.

Referrals and Empowerment: Taking Health into Your Hands

Customers flock via word-of-mouth. “If this made my life better, I wanna share it,” Vince observes. Genuine empathy drives growth. His message: “Take your healthcare needs into your own hands. Be open-minded, do your research.”

Ancient wisdom revives—psychedelics co-evolved with us. Patents stifle; competition innovates. “Far superior to prescription drugs… affordable.”

The Secret Weapon Through Quality, Transparency, And Discipline

What really separates CBD American Shaman from the sea of other hemp-derived brands is what happens behind the scenes. No hype. No inflated promises. Just hard science, lab testing, batch codes, and ruthless transparency.

Vince didn’t want shortcuts. He insisted on heavy-metals testing, pesticide screening, accurate milligram dosing. He invested in HPLC machines and chemical analyzers that break down every batch to prove purity and potency. For every batch, at every step. If a label said “10 mg,” it was 10 mg — not 8 or 12.

That discipline didn’t earn Instagram clicks or flashy ad spending. It earned something better: credibility and trust. Real customers. Repeat buyers. Word-of-mouth evangelists.
